Developing Assertiveness for Safety
Course Outline
Course description:
Many errors and accidents have occurred due to a lack of assertiveness – a failure to ‘speak up’ when you notice something potentially dangerous.
Some people have a lack of self-confidence, or a fear of challenging peers or superiors, and fail to inform their colleagues of a dangerous situation developing. Some may be reluctant to ‘speak up’ for fear of being wrong.
It takes one person to stop an accident. Our safety and that of our friends and colleagues, may depend on us being able to stand up for what we believe is wrong, or unsafe. This may be difficult in certain environments, or with limited time.
There have also been numerous examples of employees ‘speaking up’, and yet the assertiveness has not had the desired effect. In other words, despite repeated challenge from a subordinate, the accident still occurred. This course will assist you in developing appropriate levels of assertiveness, and provide a key tool to systematically ensure there is a different outcome.
